Late Summer Bank Holiday – August 29, 2022

In England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the final Monday in August is observed as the
Late Summer Bank Holiday ( and on every first Monday of August in Scotland). The date for it this year is August 29. The purpose of the vacation was to provide workers a rest before the end of the summer and the extended length of time without a holiday between then and Christmas. Prior to 1971, this holiday was recognized on the first Monday in August; however, it is now observed on the final Monday. However, Scotland has kept the original date. On this day, many people in the UK will go to nearby beaches, parks, and tourist attractions.

History of Late Summer Bank Holiday

Four national holidays—Easter Monday, the first Monday in August, Christmas Day, Whit
Monday, and New Year's Day—were established by the Bank Holidays Act of 1871 for England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. The August bank holiday is unrelated to any prior religious festival, in contrast to the Spring bank holidays.

The celebration of Sir John Lubbock in 1871, however, occurred during a significant cricket match. The holiday was chosen to provide workers one last opportunity to take advantage of the summer before the lengthy period without holidays running up to Christmas.

In 1964, Edward Heath, who was the secretary of state for industry at the time, suggested temporarily changing the England and Wales' August Bank Holiday. The move from the beginning to the end of August had been proposed for a number of years due to the fact that the early August holiday almost always conflicted with the traditional two-week summer shutdown of major industries that started in the final week of July.

By August 1971, Scotland was still on the old schedule, but England, Wales, and Northern Ireland had made the change permanently. One of the most well-known events that occurs on the August Bank Holiday is the Notting Hill Carnival, which started in 1966 as a celebration of London's Caribbean community, its culture, and customs.
