Jennette McCurdy’s Revelatory Memoir Sells Out on Amazon, One Day After Release
In an interview with "Good Morning America" on Wednesday, she commented on the title, saying, "I know that it's attention-grabbing, but it's also something that I mean truly."
The 30-year-old "iCarly" alum said that she wasn't using the title in a "flippant" manner and that she thinks those who have also experienced abuse will comprehend the idea she is attempting to get through.
Despite the somewhat conflicting reactions, she remarked, "I truly appreciate the positivity that I received from a lot of individuals."
Anyone who has suffered parental abuse, as well as anyone with a sense of humor, should be able to grasp this term.
Other people's opinions are "not for them," McCurdy continued, adding that she is "not that worried" with them.
McCurdy acknowledged that she occasionally still misses her mother, who passed away from cancer in 2013. She did, however, acknowledge that if her mother had still been alive, she would not have written her book since her "identity would still be determined by her."
"My grief over my mother used to be incredibly difficult. I would have anger and confusion over why I was upset that I was mourning for her, McCurdy said.
"I felt like she didn't deserve my tears and my anguish since she was abusive, but it has gotten so much easier that I can now feel like I can simply miss her," the speaker said. I believe it is only feasible as a result of the healing that took place throughout the book's writing.
McCurdy described the alleged abuse McCurdy's mother reportedly engaged in throughout her childhood and during her ascent to prominence as the star of "iCarly" and the spinoff series "Sam & Cat" in her frank autobiography.
"She weighs me and uses a measuring tape to measure my thighs every Sunday. After a few weeks of our daily routine, she gives me a stack of diet books, which I quickly read... Every day, five times, I weigh myself.
McCurdy said that her mother denied being aware of any eating habits when a doctor suggested that she could have had anorexia. She also said that at the age of 14, she was using a booster seat in the car since her weight had fallen so low.
The actress added that when she needed to wash, her mother would bathe her and perform "a breast and 'front butt' checkup." When the actress was 16 years old, her mother even started shaving her daughter's legs.
She claims she wants to check for any suspicious lumps or bumps since they may be cancer. Since my mother has had cancer and all, I say alright because she would know if I did," she stated.
When Mom is grading papers, I try to focus on Disneyland. By the time the examinations are through, a tremendous sense of relief floods my entire body, and I typically become aware of my body for the first time since the exam began.
McCurdy stated that her mother started to dislike her as she started to become popular.
"I never thought it was possible, but fame has strained my relationship with my mother. She wished for this. I also wanted her to possess it. She wrote, "I wanted her to be happy.
But now that I've had it, I see that she's content and I'm not. My happiness was sacrificed for her delight. I felt taken advantage of and robbed. I sometimes simply despise her when I look at her. I then despise myself for having such feelings.
McCurdy also remembered the moment her mother learned that she had begun dating but had not yet engaged in sexual activity. In her book, she claimed that her mother had verbally abused her, calling her "nothing more than a little S-T, a FLOOZY, all used up," and other things.
McCurdy alleges that in addition to other abuses, her mother misled her about who her biological father was. She claims that despite her mother's passing, her eating condition persisted; however, she has recently sought professional assistance.
"My mother physically, emotionally, and psychologically abused me in ways that will always have an influence on me. She checked my breasts and my vagina till I was 17 years old. She pressured me into a job I didn't desire when I was six years old. When I was 11 years old, she taught me an eating problem that took me of my joy and whatever free-spiritedness I may have had. McCurdy wrote, "She never informed me my father wasn't my father.
"Her death left me with more questions than answers, more suffering than comfort, and many layers of grief—the initial grief from her passing, the grief of accepting her abuse and exploitation of me, and finally, the grief that surfaces now when I miss her and start to cry—because I do still miss her and start to cry."
Along with her abusive relationship with her mother, McCurdy also alleges that she was given a $300,000 hush money payment to keep her silence regarding her time working for Nickelodeon.
“I’m Glad My Mom Died” is now available for purchase and has already topped the Amazon bestseller list.
