Harry Styles Wrote the ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ ‘Trigger Song’ in Five Minutes
Harry Styles was up “Late Night Talking” with his “Don’t Worry Darling” director Olivia
Wilde about the film’s score.
It turns out, the script for the psychological thriller only referenced a “trigger song” to haunt Styles’ character Jack and his wife Alice (Florence Pugh) as they navigate a darkly sinister 1950s suburbia.
“In prep, Harry called me and said, ‘What’s the trigger song? Like, what’s the melody?’ I said, ‘I don’t know. I’m going to different writers to write it. Do you have anything in mind?'” director Wilde revealed to Variety. “And he said, ‘I’ll think about it.’ Five minutes later, he sent me a demo from his piano, and it was what ended up in the film.”
Wilde added, “He called me and said, ‘What about this?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s it. That’s it. And that’s really insane that you did that in five minutes.'”
Styles set out to write “something that could be both sweet and creepy, entirely dependent on the context,” much like the film itself.
“I remember first playing it on the piano, and it had a sort of homemade nursery rhyme feel to it,” Styles shared. “Applied to the different moments in the film, I think it takes on a couple of different lives — I hope.”
The Grammy winner also tap dances in the movie, despite not singing. Styles said, "I feel like I've been waiting my whole life for someone to demand a 35-second tap performance from me.
Shia LaBeouf was originally substituted in the movie with the vocalist of "Watermelon Sugar." Due to his intense devotion as Jack, the "Dunkirk" actor's performance on set even caused director Wilde to cry with delight.
According to Wilde, "Harry took it to another level." He started yelling the lines to the crowd in a primal roar that was far more dramatic than what we had anticipated for the scenario since he was so immersed in the situation.
We were all in awe at the monitor, Wilde said. Even Harry, I believe, was taken aback by it. The finest acting performances happen when you are totally outside of your body.
What Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, and Olivia Wilde Have Said About Don't Worry Darling"
Harry Styles
According to Styles, he created the "trigger song," an original song performed by Pugh in
the film.
According to Styles, "I wanted something that could sound both frightening and charming, depending solely on the situation.
When I originally played it on the piano, it reminded me of a handcrafted nursery rhyme. I believe it takes on a few distinct life when applied to the various scenes in the movie—I hope.
Don't Worry Darling will feature tap dance, according to Styles.
Florence Pugh
Don't Worry Darling originally had Pugh in the supporting part of Bunny, a local wife, but
the COVID-19 outbreak forced Pugh to modify her filming plans, so she took on the major role of Alice.
I enjoy playing a distraught lady, Pugh remarked in a statement to Harper's Bazaar when asked about taking on the role.
Pugh talked on the unequal focus given to the sex sequences in the movie's May 2022 teaser during the same interview.
She declared, "It's not why we do it when it's down to your sex scenes or seeing the most famous man in the world go down on someone. It's not the reason I work in this field.
"Obviously, you're going to have talks like that when you hire the most well-known pop artist in the world. Simply said, I'm not going to talk about that because [this movie is] greater and larger than that. And the creators are more and better than that.
Olivia Wilde
Wilde addressed internet rumors of tension between her and Pugh after Pugh has done very
little promotion regarding the film. Rumors intensified when Page Six ran an anonymously sourced story alleging Pugh was unhappy about the blossoming romance between Wilde and Styles. "There is absolutely no validity to those claims," Wilde said.
She says she was "blown away" by the actress and called her "the most exciting young actress working today". She also spoke out about why she decided to fire Shia LaBeouf from the role of Jack.
